Insurance Company Meets Growing Data Management Needs with Cloudian

Farm Bureau Insurance of Michigan meets growing data management needs with Cloudian Object Storage.

Farm Bureau Insurance of Michigan serves farms of all sizes and production styles throughout the state. Upon acquiring its previous data archiving provider, the company deployed Rubrik with Cloudian’s HyperStore object storage as its archiving target.

Moving to Cloudian has given Farm Bureau Insurance an easy-to-manage, cost-effective data storage foundation that offers cloud-like scalability and flexibility in its own data centers, behind the firewall, and completely under its control.

Need a better archiving solution

Founded in 1949, Farm Bureau Insurance of Michigan provides its members with farm insurance as well as standard home and auto insurance. The company’s IT infrastructure is about 99% VMware-based and has about 2 PB of archive data, which it previously stored on another vendor’s object storage system.

When this vendor was acquired, Farm Bureau Insurance was informed that key features they needed would no longer be updated or supported. As a result, the company started looking for an alternative solution.

“Due to the sensitive nature of the data we process, we were reluctant to move to the public cloud,” said Julie Ulrich, IT systems engineer, Farm Bureau Insurance. “However, we wanted an on-premises archiving solution that would offer cloud-like scalability, flexibility and manageability and that would also integrate well with Rubrik.”

Dewpoint, one of Michigan’s leading IT and VAS resellers, recommended Cloudian’s HyperStore Object Storage to Ulrich, who found that it met all Farm Bureau Insurance criteria, including of profitability.

The company deployed HyperStore in each of its two data centers and the implementation went smoothly.

HyperStore: infinitely scalable, highly cost-effective and easy to manage

Farm Bureau Insurance has been using HyperStore for a year now, and it’s been a great solution.

“Integration with Rubrik was seamless and having Cloudian as a target made archiving pretty easy,” Ulrich said. “We recently got some new Rubrik nodes, and since I’ve been moving stuff around, I’ve just archived it. I don’t need to check much, and I get notifications if there’s a problem.”

As its data continues to grow, Farm Bureau Insurance plans to add more Cloudian capacity. The company can also integrate Cloudian’s S3 Object Lock, which provides data immutability to prevent cybercriminals from modifying or deleting backup data, allowing recovery of an unencrypted copy in the event of a ransomware attack. , without having to pay a ransom.

Additionally, Farm Bureau Insurance plans to deploy container applications in the future, in which case HyperStore’s integration with VMware Tanzu Kubernetes Grid will provide a solid storage foundation.
