Glen Ellyn owners fight Allstate Insurance Company over $300,000 water damage claim

GLEN ELLYN, Ill. (WLS) – You’re relying on your homeowners insurance to cover the damage, but a couple are battling their insurance company over a burst pipe and waterlogged home with repairs and cleanup estimated at $300,000.

This is a dispute over water damage related to a burst pipe that nearly destroyed their home. It all happened while the retired couple were stuck in South Africa. Now they say their insurer refuses to cover their claim.

From the outside, their Glen Ellyn home looks perfect. But from inside, Betsy and Floyd Rogers’ home reveals catastrophic flooding.

“And it’s very annoying because I don’t know how we’re going to be able to restore this house, that’s the real worry,” Betsy Rogers said.

A pipe burst in January causing widespread water damage, leaving all interior walls and floors destroyed by an overflow of water.

Repairs and cleanup were estimated at $300,000. This price tag and claim was denied by their insurance company, Allstate.

“We’ve been using Allstate insurance since 1964, we’ve got auto insurance, home insurance, we haven’t deviated,” Floyd Rogers said. “We paid our premiums regularly. We feel a little violated, they didn’t even make the effort to come out and see what the damage is.”

“But you can’t figure out how much has gone missing,” Betsy added. “It was hardwood floors, the whole house, the whole house, the floor is gone. The rest of the house is all studs. So you have almost every wall in the house that’s just studs .”

Betsy and Floyd are currently in South Africa, where they were visiting family when the pipe burst. They have been stuck there since the start of the pandemic due to restrictions, flight cancellations and difficulties in getting vaccinated.

“It was just a bad break, so in the process of coming out of the water, it flooded the second floor, so all the floors disappeared, went down to the first floor, went down to the basement, finally sank garage and knocked out 213,000 gallons of water,” Floyd said.

The Rogers said Allstate is denying the claim because the couple weren’t staying in the house at the time and the pipes froze.

The Rogers and their attorneys said there was no sign of the pipes freezing and the leak was the result of a failed supply line. They added that they never turned off the water or the heat when they left town.

ABC7 sent the information, estimates and photos of Rogers’ claim to Allstate. The insurance company would only say, “We protect customers and their privacy, so we do not share specific details of the claim. We will continue to work closely with the customer to resolve the claim in accordance with their policy.”

Financial and consumer experts at insurance comparison website Value Penguin said you can challenge your home insurance company’s decision by filing an appeal, filing a complaint with your state insurance department, and even asking the state to negotiate a resolution if it doesn’t work out. your favor.

“Maybe it’s time to hire a lawyer and take legal action,” said insurance expert Andrew Hurst. “But it’s a last resort, you really want to think about whether it’s worth it and that’s because it’s going to be a long and expensive process. You might end up paying more for all the fees than if you were paying for repairs out of his own pocket.”

“I’m mad at Allstate because making an accusation that something happened when you didn’t even gather the facts to prove it or you didn’t go to a client and see what happened. happened is ridiculous. I mean Allstate doesn’t support us at all,” Betsy said.
